IT WAS EXPANDED FROM THE DOWNTOWN TO THE EIGHTH STREET DISTRICT.SO WE'RE LEFT WITH THE CENTER SECTION.
THE FUNDS FOR THE DESIGN CAME OUT OF THE COUNTY PROGRAM FROM 2021.
IT WAS AN ENVIRONMENTAL BRANDING OF THE GATEWAYS FOR THE ISLAND.
THIS GATEWAY SIGN WAS PART OF THAT PROGRAM.
SO WHEN WE REALIZED THAT WE NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING SOONER RATHER THAN LATER, WE ASKED THE COUNTY IF THEY WOULD RELEASE THE FUNDING FOR JUST THAT, THE DESIGN PORTION OF THAT SIGN.
SO WE'RE WORKING WITH THE COUNTY ON THE FUNDING PIECE, BUT THEN WORKING WITH THE CITY TO DESIGN THE SIGN AND SPEARHEADED REALLY BY THE MAIN STREET DESIGN COUNCIL, WHICH IS MADE UP OF BOTH VOLUNTEERS, DESIGN PROFESSIONALS, ARCHITECTS, ENGINEERS, LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS AND THEN ALSO CITY STAFF ARE REPRESENTED ON ON THAT COUNCIL.
SO BRIEFLY, LISA, BEFORE YOU CARRY ON, I WANT YOU TO STOP YOUR PRESENTATION.
BUT SO WE REACHED OUT MAIN STREET AND CITY EMPLOYEES REACHED OUT TO THE COUNTY AND REQUESTED THEIR HELP WITH FUNDING, NOT NECESSARILY THE DESIGN, BUT JUST FUNDING AND TRYING TO GET THE GATEWAY TO OUR CITY IMPROVED BECAUSE IT WAS FALLING DOWN, CORRECT? RIGHT. WELL, BECAUSE IT HAD ALREADY BEEN APPROVED AS PART OF THAT GATEWAY PROGRAM.
SO WE JUST ASKED THE COUNTY IF WE COULD MAKE THAT MORE OF A PRIORITY SINCE WE HAD A PROBLEM WITH.
BUT THE FIRST CONCEPT ON THE DESIGN WAS PRESENTED TO THE CITY COMMISSION ON NOVEMBER 15TH.
WE RECEIVED COMMENTS FROM THE CITY COMMISSION AND WE RECEIVED ADDITIONAL COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC.
AND OVERALL, THE THE DIRECTION THAT WE RECEIVED FROM THE CITY COMMISSION WAS THAT THE SIGN BE CLEAN AND SIMPLE, THAT IT BE A TEXTURED, SOLID SURFACE, POSSIBLY COQUINA OR STUCCO, AND THAT THERE BE NO LATTICE THAT WE LOSE THE BOUGIE PART OF THE SIGN THAT WE PRESENTED LAST TIME.
AND SO WE TOOK ALL OF THAT INTO CONSIDERATION.
AND WE'VE COME UP WITH A COUPLE OF NEW DESIGNS THAT JEFF IS GOING TO WALK YOU THROUGH.
BUT I DID, YOU KNOW, IN GOING THROUGH ALL OF THIS, I WANTED TO SHOW YOU THIS IS NOT.

AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO HAVE YET ANOTHER PLAT APPLICATION, A FINAL PLAT APPLICATION.
IF THE PRELIMINARY PLAT IS APPROVED, EVEN IF IT'S APPROVED WITH MODIFICATIONS, IT GOES ON TO THE NEXT, THE NEXT STAGE IS FINAL PLAT, WHICH WILL HAVE ANOTHER HEARING IN FRONT OF THE PLANNING ADVISORY BOARD, ANOTHER HEARING IN FRONT OF THE CITY COMMISSION, AT LEAST ONE.
SO I THINK THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK WITH THE COMMUNITY.

I DO KNOW THAT IF THERE WAS NOTHING, THE WAY THAT WE INTERPRET THE LAW NOW WITH FIVE EXISTING SITES AND SOME UNDERLYING LOTS OF RECORD THAT HAVE BEEN UNTOUCHED, THE WAY THE CITY HAS INTERPRETED THAT BEFORE IS THAT THEY GET FIVE SITES, THE SITES THAT ARE CURRENTLY BUILT, PLUS ANY OF THE LOTS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TOUCHED.
THEY GET THOSE THAT WOULD ALLOW 11 AS IT IS WITHOUT HAVING ANY VARIANCE APPLICATION OR EVEN A PLOT.
AND THEN THE OTHER WAS THE PLANNING ADVISORY BOARD AND HOW STAFF MAY HAVE JUST IGNORED THE PLANNING BOARD AND THAT IT SHOULD JUST HAVE THE BUCK SHOULD HAVE STOPPED WITH THE PLANNING BOARD. THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS HERE.
